Off on the Wrong Foot

Off on the Wrong Foot:

Plantar Fasciitis/"Heel Spurs"

Robert A. Hayden, DC, PhD

Foundations are important. Stable structures are built on good, strong ones. Poor foundations cause whatever is over them to have problems.

Our feet are the foundations for our bodies. Healthy feet should allow a normal gait, symmetric distribution of weight, and free and easy movement throughout our lifetime. When feet work normally, we take them for granted. Most of the time, it is when our foundations are dysfunctional that we even take notice of them. We think we just got "off on the wrong foot."

Seniors at Fall Break

Seniors at Fall Break

Robert A. Hayden, DC, PhD

My title above is designed to catch your attention. You may be thinking about upper level college students on a fall break. If you are a guy, you may even have visions of "Girls Gone Wild" in your head.

Now the disappointment: I am really referring to senior citizens who, when they fall, break. I would like to take this opportunity to talk about a topic that is personally important to me because I take care of an aging parent. No only am I not alone, but there are going to be many more caretakers like me who are providing for parents as the Baby Boomer generation comes of age.

My Co-Worker

My Co-Worker

Robert A. Hayden, DC, PhD

The longer you live, the more likely you are to die of something. I read recently that all the health nuts out there who do everything right are someday going to die of nothing.

When talking "health," longevity is just part of the picture. We all want quality of the time we have and to live as freely and happily as possible.

My family history suggests that I have some issues to fix if I want either quantity or quality of life. I am learning more about nutrition and its role in both quantity and quality of life, and it is affecting my personal choices and those I propose to patients. I find myself as a doctor of chiropractic increasingly drawn to research-based, scientifically sound, but wholly natural solutions to health issues.

A Generation Gone to Pot

A Generation Gone to Pot

Robert A. Hayden, DC, PhD

It should not have happened to this family. Ken and Marilyn and their children had every advantage of middle class affluence, a stable marriage of two parents, and support from friends and family. Nevertheless, somehow, two children, a boy and a girl, became chronic marijuana users and felons prior to age 20, and one by age 17. Two young adults thus enter the next phase of life with limited prospects for the future, and little hope of ever transcending the tainted tale of their teens. Ken and Marilyn are broken-hearted and wondering how it came to this.

How Sweet Is It

Robert A. Hayden, DC, PhD

Mr. Gardner came to our clinic for a physical exam, but he left to begin a new phase of his life journey. He sought none of this when he made an appointment, but the information we discovered during his examination would affect every aspect of his existence for the rest of his days.

I spend a lot of time both in and outside the clinic doing physical exams for drivers who are regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT). Many of these physical are done on candidates for one of three trucking schools, although we have many clients who send drivers to us for this purpose. The trucking schools' student rosters swell whenever another industry goes out of business, so it has been brisk work recently.

Is there a Doctor in the House?

Is there a Doctor in the House?

A Chiropractic View of Obama Health Care

Robert A. Hayden, DC, PhD

I usually pick out a specific healthcare issue or condition to highlight in my Scoop article. This time, however, I am apprehensive about something that overrides specific issues and conditions, and I need to vent. If you read further, you might need to vent, too.

A patient recently asked me how the new administration's healthcare plan will affect me as a healthcare provider. I did not have a ready answer.I have thought about it much, though, and my thoughts comprise the bulk of this article.

Recent spending sprees in Washington, DC have me concerned in part because I know I will have to help pay the bill, as will future generations that we are robbing. In the trillion dollar "stimulus" bill, the American Restoration and Reinvestment Act of 2009, there is language that sets the stage for reshaping health care. As you know, the bill passed with no one apparently having read it, but the health care ball is rolling.
